The future of crop protection: FCA sets standards

The German Future Commission of Agriculture (FCA), with its members from all sectors of agriculture, NGOs and science, recommends that chemical plant protection will be eliminated in the medium term and replaced. The Industrieverband-Agrar, the association of the pesticide manufacturers, also publicly supports this statement.

 

It would be presumptuous to give the multi-nationals, that shape the crop protection industry, recommendations about their business strategy and -structure. You only have to go to the homepages of the big players and you will see that something fundamental is changing. The corporations have no choice but to withdraw from chemical crop protection, otherwise society and thus also the shareholders will refuse to follow! Let me list for this group what I think is important now:

 

  • Everyone must learn new technologies for precise physical field-work, where every single plant and its surroundings are the focus of care
  • Business advice on reducing the use of pesticides must be massively expanded, not only in number, but also in technical terms with training and further education
  • Farms and companies in agri-business must think outside the box of their operations and should not rule out changes; this costs a lot of energy in addition to the ongoing business
  • Farm managers will already have to adjust their actions to manage in the foreseeable future in their crop production without chemical protection; Oversleeping is life-threatening here
  • It is also necessary for farms that continue to operate conventionally to deal intensively with organic farming

 

I don’t want to spread panic here, but the burdens on farm managers, management and professionals in agriculture and agri-business will increase enormously. Demands in further training, new thinking, additional initiatives of cultivation trials and a lot of own trying will claim the personal capacities of the actors even more.
